SEPA’s requirements for activities related to geothermal energy
Overview
SEPA is consulting on our proposed new guidance
SEPA’s requirements for activities related to geothermal energy
The extraction of geothermal energy can involve a number of activities which are regulated by SEPA under the Water Environment (Controlled Activities) (Scotland) Regulations 2011 (CAR).
This guidance is directed at anybody planning to install a geothermal energy system. It is designed to help developers understand what authorisation is required by SEPA for controlled activities, as defined by the Water Environment (Controlled Activities) (Scotland) Regulations 2011 (CAR), associated with geothermal energy systems.
Why your views matter
We are seeking views from from interested parties including drillers, consultants and developers involved in the geothermal energy schemes on our proposed new guidance. We especially want to know if the guidance adequately specifies and explains the risks to the water environment and the authorisation that is required under CAR.
